Emergency Plumbing

What counts as an emergency

If any of these are happening, don't wait until morning - call now.

Burst pipes

Water you cannot stop - every minute is more damage. Mains off, then call.

Sewage backing up

Waste surfacing in drains, toilets or the overflow gully is a health hazard, not an inconvenience.

No hot water

A failed system with young kids or elderly family in the house goes to the front of the queue.

Overflowing toilet

When it's the only toilet in the house, it's an emergency - simple as that.

Flooding appliances

Washing machine or dishwasher hoses letting go and flooding the floor.

Suspected gas leak

Smell gas? Get everyone out first and call from outside. If the smell is strong, call 000 first - then us for the repair.

Our Process

What happens when you call

  1. Murat answers

Not a call centre - the plumber who's actually coming to your house. Describe what's happening and where you are.

  2. Damage control

You'll get immediate instructions for right now: where your water mains is, what to shut off, what to move - so things stop getting worse before we arrive.

  3. Fix or make safe

Most emergencies are fixed on the spot. When a full repair needs daylight or parts, the situation is made completely safe and the follow-up is booked before we leave.

  4. The full fix

Any follow-up work comes with a written quote and honest advice, so there are no surprises.

How Fast Is 24/7, Really?

Anatomy of a 3am callout

2:47am
Call answered. Burst pipe under the kitchen sink - water everywhere.
2:49am
Damage control. "Mains tap is at the front near the meter - turn it clockwise. I'm on my way."
3:15am
On site. Pipe isolated, burst section cut out and replaced.
3:50am
Done. Water back on, area cleaned up, family back to bed.

An illustrative timeline - but not a hypothetical one. From a real review: "Called him for an emergency at around 2-3 am for a burst pipe in the kitchen came in less 30 mins fixed it."

While You Wait

What to do before we arrive

Water emergency? Find your water mains tap - usually at the front of the property near the meter - and turn it clockwise until the flow stops. Every household member should know where this tap is; tonight is a good night to learn.

If water is anywhere near power points or appliances, switch off the affected circuits at the switchboard - only if it's safe to reach. Water damage is fixable; electricity and water together are a different category of problem.

Smell gas? Don't operate switches or anything with a flame, open doors and windows only if it's quick to do, and get everyone outside. If the smell is strong or anyone feels unwell, call 000 or your gas distributor's emergency line first - then call us for the repair.

Emergency Plumbing (24/7) FAQs

Common questions

Do you really answer the phone at 3am?

Yes - ask the customer whose burst kitchen pipe was fixed within half an hour of a 2-3am call. The 24/7 line is Murat's own phone, not an answering service.

What actually counts as a plumbing emergency?

Anything causing active damage or making the home unliveable: burst pipes, sewage backing up, the only toilet out of action, no hot water in a vulnerable household, or a suspected gas leak. If you're not sure, call anyway - you'll get an honest answer, not an upsell.

What should I do while I wait?

Turn off the water at the mains for leaks and bursts, kill power to affected areas if water is near electricals, and for gas - everyone outside first, then call. Murat will talk you through your exact situation on the phone.

Will I know the cost before work starts?

Yes. You'll get a straight explanation of the problem and the cost to fix it before any work begins - being urgent doesn't mean being a blank cheque.

What areas do you cover after hours?

The same areas as always: Greenvale, Gladstone Park, Westmeadows, Pascoe Vale, Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Brunswick, Coburg, Glenroy, Mitcham and surrounds.

I'm a tenant - do I call you or the property manager?

If you can reach your property manager quickly, start there - Victorian renting rules also include provisions for tenants arranging genuinely urgent repairs, so check your agreement. Mickey Plumbing works with agencies across Melbourne, so either way the paperwork side is smooth.
